Skin Care Product Shopping

The present skin care industry rakes in billions of dollars in sales of their products through aggressive advertising. As with any other product, what they don't say in an ad is what is usually important. As a consumer, it is your duty to read between the lines and to make an informed decision on what products you really need and which are just unsubstantial claims to get more revenue for the company. Since you are the one to spend the dough and to ultimately use the product, you might as well get to know well the product you are purchasing.

Owing to advertising, the average person has spent around five hundred dollars worth of skin care products. This statistic is based on a study done on Americans in 2001. At present, a significant increase has been noted, especially due to the introduction of more expensive products in the market. Some think that as long as it gets the job done for your skin type, it doesn't really matter how much it costs.

Most companies that deal with cosmetics cater to a general description of skin type, if it is oily, dry, oily-dry, etc. But the skin differs for each person, even it they belong to same type of skin. An ingredient in a hypo-allergenic soap for your face may give a bad rash to another. This is the reason why products for the skin should be personalized to the customer's needs and skin condition. The only way you can find out what is right for your skin is to first consult with your dermatologist, or skin care specialist. Unfortunately, because of a lack of dermatologists, duly licensed, most of them do not bother anymore with the basic testing of the skin unless upon initial checking, there might be complications.

An aesthetician can also assist you in deciding which product works best for you. They are also licensed to work on the skin of patients, although cannot dispense medications. Some skin types just need the usual moisturizers and treatments while others need prescription medications and procedures. If the latter occurs, then a physician is needed.
