[7/18/08] Hospitalizations Soar For Kids With Skin Infections
The data are included in a new AHRQ analysis of hospitalization trends among children 17 and younger. It shows skin infections ranked as the 8th most common reason for child hospitalizations in 2006, up from 17th in 2000. The legs, face and buttocks were most common sites for infections among hospitalized children in 2006. Reasons for the rise in hospitalizations are unclear but may be in part linked to increasing resistance to antibiotics.

At present in excess of 700 people are pursuing a legal action but it is estimated that there may be a further 1400 people affected that have not yet reported their sofa injuries. Argos have withdrawn their affected ’Pia’ and ’Bari’ ranges but other retailers have continued to sell the sofas in question. Often symptoms do not appear for several weeks and the victims are at a loss to explain what could have caused them. Symptoms include itchy, blistered skin and often the victims are in such extreme discomfort as to warrant hospital treatment. A common issue is that often the people suffering the skin problems have not had the cause of their problem successfully identified until seeking specialist help from a dermatologist.

Analyzing government data on Caucasian men and women ages 15 to 39, Mark Purdue and his colleagues at the National Cancer Institute found that, between 1980 and 2004, annual cases of melanoma among young women increased by 50 percent from 9.4 cases per 100,000 women to 13.9 cases per 100,000 women. Researchers also found a greater increase in young women having thicker and metastatic melanomas in which the cancer spreads to other areas of the body during that time period. The incidence of melanoma among young men did not change over this time period, the authors noted in a press release.
