[5/12/11] Cosmetic and Skin Care Market Showing Slow Improvements
While popular perception would have us believe that when times are tough, consumers use cosmetics to ‘put their best face forward,’ the cosmetic and skincare market is not recession proof. While consumers purchase color cosmetics and facial skincare in good times and bad, their behavior is directly influenced by the economy. A recent Mintel survey reveals that while this category is improving, it is not thriving just yet.
Just over a quarter (27%) of shoppers surveyed say they made replacement purchases in color cosmetics, but avoided “splurge” products in 2010, down from 33% in 2009. In addition, 39% of those surveyed said they actively looked for sales and tried to only buy products on sale during 2010 versus 45% in 2009.
“Women are really starting to do their research when it comes to making cosmetic and skincare purchases. The days where favorite beauty products were simply automatic replacement purchases are gone,” notes Kat Fay, senior beauty analyst at Mintel. “Nearly a quarter of respondents claim to shop around more to compare prices while 16% say they use the internet more to research prices and products.”

[5/5/11] BIONOVA Skin Care Asks How Healthy is an Exfoliation Procedure
What is Exfoliation from the skincare industry’s point of view?
Exfoliation is a procedure that involves the removal of “dead” skin cells from the skin’s surface. Theoretically this sounds logical, and that exfoliation should benefit the skin.
In practice, it is impossible to perform mechanical or chemical exfoliation without damaging other layers of the skin which means: breaking reproductive and differentiating ability of the skin, exhausting its natural resources that causes the dysfunction of re-synthesis of connective tissue elements (elastin, collagen, fibronectin and other structural proteins), and overall interferes with the skin’s normal functioning.

Cosmetic microneedling has been used in various forms for over 50 years, since Doctor Pistor discovered that the skin can be stimulated to greatly increase its levels of collagen using microneedles as thin as a human hair and as short as half a millimetre. Such a procedure has been proven to get results equivalent to (if not superior to) chemical peels, micro dermabrasion and laser resurfacing but without the hefty price tag, down time or trauma to the skin.
[4/15/11] HydraFacial
Needles, chemicals, magic? When it comes to getting perfect skin, women have tried everything. It’s too bad the results (constant irritation, sudden redness, skin scaling off for a week) aren’t nearly as dramatic as the methods.
The HydraFacial is a better approach: a non-irritating treatment that exfoliates but also hydrates the skin at the same time. Designed for all skin types and conditions (acne, wrinkles, and dark circles), it infuses the skin’s surface with moisturizing serums and gently removes impurities. The results can often be seen immediately and continue to improve with the treatment sessions. Facial acid peels with little or no post-peel scaling or downtime are also possible with the HydraFacial, a non-laser resurfacing system that hydrates the skin while it resurfaces in a process called “hydradermabrasion”.

There is a lot of hype promoting natural and organic products for healthy skincare, but the scientists at BIONOVA are challenging these misconceptions. Although plants and humans are both living organisms, they are two different entities. In fact, most active substances produced in plants do not physiologically exist in a human body.
Humans consume plants for nutritional purposes, the plants then undergo metabolic processes in the digestive system that decomposes, absorbs and synthesizes them into new components and the body eliminates what has not been used. The skin alone cannot undergo these metabolic processes and eliminate the excess nutrients.

The superbug staph infection, MRSA, has become a global health threat for adults and children, but antibiotics aren't needed to treat all cases, according to new guidelines released by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).
MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphyloccus aureus, is a bacterium that is hard to kill with the most commonly used antibiotics. The superbug is responsible for about 60% of all skin infections seen in hospital emergency rooms. If the bacteria invade broken skin, life-threatening lung, blood, bone, joint, or nervous system infections can result.
