Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin condition wherein there is an imbalance between the growth of new skin cells and the shedding of the old dead ones. At the faster rate that these new skin cells develop, it consequently forms a heavy buildup of the old skin cells since they cannot maintain the same growth rate.

The normal rate that a healthy skin cell develops is 21 to 28 days. Psoriasis increases the rate of development to 3 - 6 days. This causes an increase in the amount of dead skin cells that have not yet been removed on the skin. This buildup forms a crusty mass and even papules underneath causing an inflammation to occur and pus to develop.

It commonly develops on the joints such as elbows and knees, chest and scalp. It affects both men and women of any age group. Statistics show that there are more than seven million Americans affected with this disease.

Psoriasis is theorized to be caused by a disorder in the immune system wherein it becomes too active. When an inflammation occurs, its reaction of building new cells will be compounded because of this disorder.

There are several treatments for psoriasis. It is always safe to first try out the simplest form of treatment before using the more complicated ones. Consult first your dermatologist as to what is best for your skin.
