Nothing soothes a sun burn faster than the essence of the aloe vera plant. For those without a plant nearby, Hawaiian Tropic Cool Aloe I.C.E. Gel with Lidocaine is almost better. The gel is blue in tint and comes in a 12 ounce bottle which should last the whole summer if sunscreen is also prudently used.
Since I am a very fair skinned individual, I like to keep two bottles in my house. One is in the medicine cabinet, and the other is reserved for those days when a sun burn sneaks up on me-- in the refrigerator! People with allergies to lidocaine will need to use plain aloe vera gel, and not Hawaiian Tropic Cool Aloe I.C.E. with Lidocaine.
The active ingredients include lidocaine, aloe vera gel, and allantoin, a moisturizer found in many lotions and cosmetics. I do find that this particular aloe vera gel seems to be a little stickier than most after application. This isn't a problem for me since the last thing I want to put over a sun burn is clothing. I do find this an issue if I need sun burn relief while I am out, but for simple recuperation at home a little stickiness is bearable.
Hawaiian Tropic Cool Aloe I.C.E. with Lidocaine is very cool to burned skin at room temperature, and the 0.8% lidocaine provides a gentle numbing sensation. The makers also state the gel may be used to help the healing of small scrapes, but I have not personally used it in that application. I don't want to use the gel on any cuts because the gel is so sticky after drying.
However, if you plan for fun in the sun this summer, I highly recommend Hawaiian Tropic Cool Aloe I.C.E. with Lidocaine for quick sun burn relief. Though, don't forget the best therapy for sun burns is prevention, Prevention, PREVENTION!
